In this first work, The Politics of Liberty, the poet approaches the Muse of Poetry to ask her for some inspiration and guidance about the state of the world. The poet is immediately reprimanded by the Muse for having raised this issue before but doing little about it.
He has squandered the opportunity.
She is willing to offer her help but only if he becomes more resolute and pays attention to the issues at hand - rather than his own interests.
The Muse then gives her account of the state of the world, but then suggests he should listen to a higher authority – truth itself.
The result is the Politics of Liberty.
